In this large transportation company, a mid-level manager found himself stuck in a cycle that many leaders know all too well: constant firefighting. Each day was consumed with urgent problems, leaving little time for strategic thinking or meaningful leadership. What felt like supportive responsiveness was actually keeping him and the team trapped in a reactive mode. The manager was exhausted, and his team was dependent, waiting for him to solve every issue.
He knew something had to change.
To shift the dynamic, this client partnered with our Gig Talent Coach who launched a six-month, one-on-one coaching engagement. The process began with a qualitative 360 assessment, gathering input from twelve colleagues, including managers, peers, and direct reports. It turns out this wasn’t a matter of personality or capability. The challenge was that no one had ever taught him the critical skill of developing others.
The results were clear. With coaching, this leader began to see that leadership wasn’t about solving every problem. It was about helping his team build the confidence and skills to solve problems themselves. Through guided conversations, practical tools, and real-world application, he started making small but powerful shifts.
Before coaching, this leader believed being a good manager meant always being available and responsive. He soon realized that in trying to help, he was unintentionally holding his team back. Within weeks, his approach changed. Instead of reacting to every issue, he began holding regular one-on-ones with each team member. Those meetings became opportunities to coach his direct reports through their own decision-making, empowering them to take ownership and find their own solutions.
In less than three months, the change was undeniable. He had gone from a burned-out manager to a leader who develops other leaders. His team grew more confident and independent, thriving under the responsibility they had once lacked. He reclaimed his own time to focus on high-impact priorities, while his team flourished with greater autonomy and accountability.
Reflecting on the journey, he shared:
“This Gig Talent Coach has helped me turn from a leader who is burned out to a leader who is engaged with his team and holding people accountable in new ways. My team is delegated to more and responding incredibly well, helping set and achieve their own deadlines. Communication has improved with my team and in turn, the broader employee base. This Coach shares knowledge from his own personal experience, which is incredibly helpful. He has a great selection of tools for more effective self-management. It has been an incredibly thought-provoking journey.”
Too often, leaders focus only on surface-level fixes, trying to keep their heads above water by working harder and responding faster. But those efforts rarely address the root issues and only reinforce unhealthy patterns. In this case, by stepping back to reflect and learn new approaches, this leader and his team leapt forward together.
The transformation wasn’t just about one individual. It was about building a sustainable leadership model. One where managers stop firefighting and start empowering, creating stronger teams and stronger organizations.
At Gig Talent, we know the pressures leaders face. Whether you’re navigating burnout, stepping into a new role, or trying to reshape how your team operates, our coaches help unlock the leader within you.
